Chuck out the chintz! Worsted manufacturing in Northamptonshire 1675- 1800

Wendy Rauybould

A retired librarian and currently Editor of Northamptonshire Past and Present, I

moved to Northamptonshire in 1975 and developed a strong interest in local

history, which culminated in 2005, in a PhD for a study of Northamptonshire

worsted production in the 17th and 18th centuries.

This small workshop-based 'cottage' industry forms a fascinating episode in the

county's history, when rural poverty and underemployment met an increasing

supply of long-staple combing wool (from early enclosures) and local

entrepreneurs determined to add value to the wool, which was being exported

unprocessed to the looms of Norwich and other places where protestant refugees

from Europe were sharing their skills in working with it.

The fly in the ointment was the growing fashion for Indian cottons, so to protect

local employment opportunities the Government passed the Calico Acts and

chucked out the chintz!

Meeting at 19:15 on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (apart from August, December, and January) at Duston Community Centre, Pendle Road, NN5 6DT;

The Sugar & Spice Club was formed in 1967 when it was felt there was a need for a group for young mums, the object being to provide facilities for recreation in the interests of social welfare for women in the area, without distinction of political, religious, or other opinions. We have had a very varied selection of Speakers and, throughout the past 55 years, we have raised over £90,000 for local Charities. White Lion HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts

Wed, 29th Oct 2025 19:30 - 21:30

When & where do we meet?

We meet on Wednesday evenings at the Main Hall, St Luke's Community Centre, Main Road, Duston NN5 6JB from 7:30 - 9:30pm

Who we are & what we do;

White Lion HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is a club based in Northampton that study and train in the martial art traditions of the Medieval and early Renaissance fencing masters. Our primary areas of focus are the longsword of the 15th Century Germanic tradition, sword and buckler, pollaxe and spear. As the club becomes more established, it is hoped that we may also add Polish sabre into our roster.

We use manuals to study historical fencing techniques and then practice them in a safe and controlled fashion although our approach is to also have fun whilst doing so! A typical evening at training would include a short warm-up, interpretation of techniques and putting them into practice, ending the evening with either some free-play or further discussion and practice. Weapons used will be appropriate to the level of experience and protective equipment.

Chief Instructor Sensei John Hurley 6th Dan - founded the Luton Branch of Higashi Karate in 1995 and has now opened a Northampton Branch in 2023, and has been teaching for over 30 years.

The Northampton club had humble beginnings in a hall in St James and continues to run a Monday session there 7-8:30pm (Doddridge Centre Limited,109 St James Road, Northampton, NN5 5LD), but due to ever increasing class sizes it has resulted us moving the Wednesday's session to bigger a location, we are now opening at Duston Community Centre, Pendle Road, NN5 6DT, Main Hall on a Wednesday from 7:30-9pm. White Lion HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts

Wed, 5th Nov 2025 19:30 - 21:30

When & where do we meet?

We meet on Wednesday evenings at the Main Hall, St Luke's Community Centre, Main Road, Duston NN5 6JB from 7:30 - 9:30pm

Who we are & what we do;

Mon, 10th Nov 2025 13:15 - 14:15

At Duston Community Centre, Pendle Road, NN5 6DT on Mondays from 13:15-14:15.

Unleash your little one's creativity and explore a world of messy fun without the clean-up stress. Suitable for ages 6 months to 5 years

Our messy play classes are designed to spark imagination and support early development through hands-on, exploratory fun. Perfect for little hands and curious minds, these sessions will encourage imaginative play and creativity and also build fine motor skills, social skills and confidence.

Each week, little ones will have the opportunity to explore a variety of colours, textures, materials and tools in a fun and safe environment. Come and play, splash, squish, and most importantly make a mess!

*Please note*

We recommend that both you and your little ones wear clothing that you do not mind getting messy. Please remember to also bring a towel with you, and a spare change of clothes. A swimming nappy is also recommended for babies who like to paddle.

Due to the nature of our classes it can get very messy and slippery. I will always try my best to keep on top of any spillages but please take extra caution with your little ones and encourage them to walk around the stations.

We will always have a water station for you to use to get clean after all the messy fun!

Little Mess Northampton

Mon, 24th Nov 2025 13:15 - 14:15

White Lion HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts

Wed, 26th Nov 2025 19:30 - 21:30

When & where do we meet?

We meet on Wednesday evenings at the Main Hall, St Luke's Community Centre, Main Road, Duston NN5 6JB from 7:30 - 9:30pm

Who we are & what we do;

Little Mess Northampton

Mon, 1st Dec 2025 13:15 - 14:15

White Lion HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts

Wed, 3rd Dec 2025 19:30 - 21:30

When & where do we meet?

We meet on Wednesday evenings at the Main Hall, St Luke's Community Centre, Main Road, Duston NN5 6JB from 7:30 - 9:30pm

Who we are & what we do;
