Let's Celebrate Duston - British Timken

Let's Celebrate Duston - British Timken

Sat, 12 Jun 2021 00:01

British Timken played an integral part in the growth of this village. Many families moved to Duston to work in the factory that was situated at the bottom of the village. Most people from Duston know someone that worked for this worldwide company. The company held regular worker's family days where you could see inside the factory and enjoy a buffet afterwards. It also ran the very popular British Timken Show, attracting big names from the world of show jumping. An event fondly remembered by a lot of people.

After the factory closed and the lights were switched off for the last time it was demolished to make way for housing but out of the ashes with the help of s106 money and a local artist came the beautiful Timken Art sculpture. Why not take a trip down there to see the old pictures from the past that are set in the roller bearing shape. You can pass by the Timken gates which DPC have taken ownership of for posterity and visit the turnstile that has been preserved in the Timken pocket park.

Enjoy your trip down memory lane!

Let's Celebrate Duston - Royal British Legion

Wed, 16 Jun 2021 00:01

The Royal British Legion, Duston and District Branch and the Women's Section have a great presence in our village.

2021 marks the centenary of the formation of the Royal British Legion; comprising four national organisations of ex-servicemen, the RBL has been able to offer support all those who have suffered as a result of service for the past 100 years.

This happy band of volunteers work tirelessly, supporting veterans and their families and were an integral part of the relief effort during the pandemic. Volunteers helped to deliver food parcels, commemorate military events by delivering gifts and so much more.

Duston Parish Council are very proud to work in partnership with members of the Duston branch on many projects including Duston Remembers every November

Let's Celebrate Duston - Volunteers

Sat, 19 Jun 2021 00:01

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in your community. There are a great many volunteers all over Duston helping to run youth organisations, calling on neighbours and keeping our community looking clean by litter picking.

Volunteering is a rewarding thing to do and has great benefits not only for the people it helps but to the volunteer too.

During the pandemic, a great volunteer movement arose in the form of Covid Mutual Aid Groups. Duston's CMAG was run by Elaine Stonehouse and DPC are delighted to be working with Elaine to form a Duston Good Neighbour Scheme so that the great work can continue to help people right across the village.

We have many other opportunities available so please do get in touch if you would like to get involved with any of the following:

Let's Celebrate Duston - Areas of Interest

Tue, 22 Jun 2021 00:01

Many of you commented on how by taking part in the Easter Trail you discovered parts of the village you didn't know existed. It encouraged you to get out and discover other areas of interest in our village too. Many of these we all pass daily, but do you take the time to explore them and their history?

What does the Rose Garden represent? Why is there a magpie in the Duston Sign? What is that funny little building on Rosevilla Farm?

Why not make it your mission to go out with your family and see what you can find; you can then use a rainy afternoon researching more!

Let's Celebrate Duston - Our Poppy Cascade

Let's Celebrate Duston - Our Poppy Cascade

Wed, 23 Jun 2021 00:01

Back in 2018 something wonderful happened. Inspired by the poppy display at the Tower of London, Duston Parish Council set about creating something for our village to commemorate the centenary of WW1.

We asked you to knit, crochet, craft or sew poppies for us and what happened next was nothing short of amazing:

Over 100 groups, individuals & organisations took up the challenge. Our youngest crafters were toddlers from the local nursery and our eldest a lady of 107 years young who wanted to join in!

5200 poppies were knitted, crocheted, crafted & sewn; some were even sent from Scotland!

50 volunteers glued, pinned & poked in the poppies

Our facebook post reached almost 55,000 people and we featured in news articles, magazines and the BBC news.

We are currently helping other villages make their own tribute. Ours will be on display for the 4th year running during Oct/Nov

Thank you for getting involved

PRACTICES

ST LUKE'S PRIMARY CARE CENTRE

Did you know?

Contrary to local myth St Luke's Primary Care Centre has only ever been one GP practice. In the early days, the surgery worked over two sites, one at Southfield Road and the other site on the Harlestone Road. In November 2012, both sites were moved into the new purpose-built premises, where we are to this day.

  • In the last 3 months the surgery has received 66,156 telephone calls into the practice and has issued 23,457 prescriptions.
  • St Luke's Primary Care Centre currently has 38 clinical members of staff; this is made up of Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacists, Doctors, First Contact Physiotherapists, Health Care Assistants, Nurses, Paramedic, Phlebotomist and Social Prescribing Link Workers.

The surgery also has 36 non-clinical members of staff consisting of Admin, Prescription Team, Reception, Secretaries and a Site Supervisor.

We are so lucky in Duston to have a shop or business for just about everything. We also have a choice of areas to shop in!

Why not support local where you can by visiting the wealth of shops on MALVERN GROVE. Situated just off Chiltern Avenue you can grab the basics on your way past and catch the last post.

Here are just some of the types of shop you can find but do check out our directory for more information by clicking the title link.

Formerly the site of the old British Timken Sports & Social Club, DUSTON SPORTS CENTRE was taken on by Duston Parish Council and rebuilt to include a gym and sports centre for local people. It also has a cafe/bar and conference room that can be hired out.

The centre is managed by Northants Leisure Trust and has a great selection of classes and activities for all ages and abilities. Membership allows you to use other centres within the trilogy group.

Duston Parish Council regularly work in partnership with the staff who give us tremendous support at our Duston Fun Day.

We have saved the best till last.

What a fabulous bunch you are!

Many of you have lived your whole life in this village and some are newcomers. Duston has seen massive growth over the past 50 years and often boundaries are blurred with us being so integrated with our neighbours in Upton, Dallington and Sixfields.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting us at our events and for the efforts made right across the village for Duston, Northampton and East Midlands in Bloom competitions.

We also want to encourage you to keep up the amazing support that you give to our shopkeepers, our schools, our businesses, our village and say a BIG THANK YOU to all the teachers, teaching assistants & staff & healthcare workers who nurture, educate and care for us.

Without you all we wouldn't be Duston!

Today is all about YOU so feel proud of yourself and the village you live in.

SO...

What do you love about Duston? - Tell us

What would you like to see in the village? - Show us

Would you like to be more involved? - How?

Do you have a lovely Duston story ? - Share it with us

Do you have a photo of the village that best expresses what Duston represents? - Send us it

Have you enjoyed celebrating our village? - Give us feedback

Get in touch - we would love to hear from you;
